The 99: Cultural Comics about Islam from Tashkeel by Naif Al-Mutawa
I am happy to see that there are many people trying to change the face of Islam. One of the most brilliant new ideas to hit the market is this new comic book series called The 99.
Just this year I went to Book Expo America in New York. I attended the expo to develop ideas for the new book I am writing on Islam and communications within the Muslim World. While there, one of the seminars I attended was about comic books and the spread of Manga. While I was listening to this lecture, I had thought about the concept of an Islamic-based comic series. I had no idea at the time that this was already in production.
Listen to an interview of Dr. Naif Al-Mutawa on the creation of The 99 from Studio 360.
There is a dire need for people in the West to make positive changes and be pro-active in introducing the West to concepts from Islam that are positive. We are constantly bombarded by the press as being negative, barbaric Neanderthals!
The 99 is the brain child of Dr. Naif Al-Mutawa. It is being released by Tashkeel Comics. The concept behind The 99 is the use The Ninety-Nine names and attributes of Allah as archetypes for the characters of the comic. The set-up is similar to what many fans of the X-Men would expect. Each of the characters has an ability, and of course, there is a villain.
You can download a copy of The 99.
Here is the link to The 99: Origins.
I pray InshaAllah that they are also going to convert the comic into a live-action animated series. If Dr Naif Al-Mutawa is reading this or the people from Tashkeel Comics, I would love to do the Voice-Over for the Evil Nemesis Rughal!
