New sh ow on the CW is about to be released dealing with issues of the trouble that many immigrants to America face. Aliens in America is a new sitcom on the CW that is premised on a Pakistani exchange student who comes to the US.
The CBC in Canada launched a new show dealing with Muslim characters last season. The show was very well received in Canada and has been signed for another season. Little Mosque on the Prairie
a take off of the classic Michael Landon family show Little House on the Prairie. Little House represents traditional TV Americana and the new venture by Zarka
Nawaz will be accepted as a momentous step for the Muslim Community in the west to bridge the communication gap between cultures.
One of the great features of Little Mosque is how Zarka Nawaz is able to capture the Hot Conflict issues
and deal with them in a way that is humorous and true to reality.
Aliens in America
The new plot line on IMDb is as follows:
Plot Outline:
A young Muslim student from Pakistan is sent to live with a Christian family in Wisconsin as part of a foreign exchange program. The character's name is Raja. He is apparently from Pakistan which is a Muslim country yet the name Raja is a clear Hindu predominant name. This little oversight hopefully is not an indication of the depth of the future character development.
As always I encourage any effort to have better Muslim communications, public relations, and creative media exposure. Discussing the Hot Conflict issues between religions, both Islam and Christianity in a civilized way, always helps the debate. I just hope the sitcom is true to reality in dealing with actual Muslim American concerns, and does not become a cheap stereotypical lowest denominator form of humor that is common these days.
Aliens in America is scheduled to start fall 2007.
